Melanie Smit with her hand on a large textured painting

Art is the window
of the soul.

Melanie Smit is one of South Africa’s hidden artists. Her artistic diversity is pursued through a variety of mediums and she is best known for her abstract work. The essence of her art lies in the profound interconnectedness of nature, personal encounters, and the act of painting. The blending of techniques across genres is a display of Melanie’s work in multiple media, all bearing a visible and tangible overlap.

Melanie, born in 1973 in Bonnievale, South Africa, grew up on a farm nestled amidst the magnificent Langeberg mountains, where she was immersed in the beauty of nature from an early age. Currently residing in Trekoskraal, Melanie finds her inspiration in the captivating allure of the sea and the scenic beauty of the West Coast. Melanie’s work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, both locally and abroad. During her time in the UK, Melanie spent five years dedicated to creating vibrant murals for hospitals and schools, leaving her artistic mark in these important institutions.

In addition to her mural work, Melanie showcased her talent through solo exhibitions held in the Isle of Wight, presenting her artwork to a broader audience and sharing her creative vision with the local community. While residing in Vienna, Melanie found herself deeply inspired by the richness of art and the historical tapestry that enveloped the unique landscape. The city’s cultural heritage and artistic legacy left an indelible impression on her creative sensibilities.
